Although I encourage eating organically grown fruits and vegetables, sometimes is acceptable to alternate your shopping if you have tight budget or organic produce is simply not available. Shop your produce smartly based on these two lists – Dirty Dozen and Clean 15.  These lists are the guideline to fruits and vegetables that are the most and least likely to contain pesticide residue.

List based on The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Shoppers Guide

Clean 15: (Lowest in Pesticide, enjoy both in conventional and organic)

  1. Onions
  2. Sweet corn
  3. Pineapples
  4. Avocado
  5. Asparagus
  6. Sweet peas
  7. Mangoes
  8. Eggplant
  9. Cantaloupe (domestic)
  10. Kiwi
  11. Cabbage
  12. Watermelon
  13. Sweet potatoes
  14. Grapefruit
  15. Mushrooms

Dirty Dozen: (12 most contaminated, buy these organics whenever is possible)

  1.   Apples
  2.   Celery
  3.   Sweet bell peppers
  4.   Peaches
  5.   Strawberries
  6.   Nectarines – imported
  7.   Grapes
  8.   Spinach
  9.   Lettuce
  10.   Cucumbers
  11.   Blueberries
  12.   Potatoes
